Whenever I feel discouraged about meeting and attaining my personal or professional goals, I like to remember the words of Benjamin Mays, "The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach." Set attainable goals, keep reaching for the big ones--got it!

One of my favorite poems for thoughts…

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I look forward to seeing you in the office this week!

“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.”
--Arthur Ash

OI Partners Newsletter: Leadership Strategies in a Time of Growth

Leadership Strategies in a Time of Growth

April 2010

In this issue:

Who's in Control here?
Leading Across the Generational Chasm
Finding the Path
Holistic Leadership

A Recession's Effect on Leadership

Leadership comes in all sizes and shapes and it is no longer defined by title, expertise or experience. It can appear in the most unexpected places. Keeping the focus of everyone in your organization on a vision can require the flexibility of a chameleon, the charisma of a rock star and the wisdom of an ancient oracle. What are we poor mortals to do? Start with recognizing the multiple viewpoints and goals of the people you are leading and bring them with you in the journey. We have provided some strategies and techniques to guide you. Even more important is putting aside perceptions of the past and taking a risk on creating the future.

Sincerely,
Ron Ennis, Ph.D., CMF
Jean Erickson Walker, Ed.D., CMF
